David & Goliath - A great story of a fighting faith!

I wrote this a few years ago, but it still rings true today...
Almost 15 years ago, a new heavy weight champion of the world was crowned. Does any body know who that was? Well in case you don't follow boxing, Evander Holyfield became the heavy weight champion of the world for the third time in his career on November 9, 1996. He defeated Mike Tyson, the most feared man in all of boxing .
There is a lot to this story, and I want to take you through the events leading up to that night, as well showing you another man, who in the face incredible odds never turned his faith from God.
My scripture is 1 Samuel 17:40-47.
In this chapter, you have David. A young boy in his late teens. Who was at this time the court musician for King Saul. And once again, Israel was at war with the Philistines. Come with me now to Israel, and watch the events as they take place.
You're an Israeli soldier. You are only a few miles from Jerusalem. Encamped on one side of the Valley of Elah are your troops, and the Philistines are on the opposite side of the Valley.
Just across the valley there are thousands of men doing the same thing as you. Only they are your enemies. You see the tents being pitched, and the soldiers are cleaning their weapons. In the air is the smell of smoke, as camp fires are burning. You know that they are here for one reason. To conquer you. As time passes, tension begins to arise. You begin to think, " Is tonight going to be the last night that I can look into the heavens and see the stars? Is tonight the night when I will fall asleep, only to be killed as mind is thinking about my sons and daughters playing in the fields?" I wonder if the soldiers on the other side want to be here, or are they just serving their king so their children will have some food on their plates?"
Now some time has passed, and you see that the soldiers on the other side are not attacking. Nor are you attacking them. Then your heart stops. Before you, you see a man approaching like you've never seen before. He is coming down his side of the valley. Then stops.
He is close to ten feet tall. On his head is a bronze helmet, on his chest a coat of bronze armour that weighs close to 125 pounds, and on his legs, bronze leggings. He is armed with a bronze javelin that has a 15 pound iron head.(in comparison, the official weight for an Olympic javelin is 800 grams, or one and three quarter pounds.)
He shouts out a challenge for all to hear, "Why do you come out and line for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become you subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us."
All is silent. Then he shouts," This day I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other."
How is this like the boxing match that took place many years ago? Let me tell you.
Close to twenty years ago, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson were to fight each other. Then Mike got himself put into prison for rape. So the fight was postponed. Then 18 years ago, Evander Holyfield was forced to retire from boxing because of a heart defect that threatened not only his career, but also his life.
Being the man that he is, Holyfield went to a Benny Hinn crusade. You see Holyfield is a devout Christian and never lost faith that God would heal him. At this crusade, I remember seeing it on T.V., Holyfield was brought up on stage and then he was asked if he believed that God would heal him. He said, "Yes", and bang, to the floor he went. He went to the doctor after that and told the doctor that he had been healed. The doctor, trying to humour Holyfield, agreed to do some more tests on his heart. The tests came back negative. His heart was perfect. The doctor asked for a second opinion and another doctor did some tests, they too came back negative. Holyfield was healed. The doctor's now say that their initial tests were faulty. That there was never anything wrong with Holyfield, just some misdiagnosis.
Holyfield never lost hope in the power of God. He knew that God had a plan for his life and that at times his faith would be tested. And it was. Three years later, he was offered a chance to fight Mike Tyson.
In Tyson's first three fights after he got out of prison, he fought for a total of about four rounds. To see a man being knocked out in less than two minutes was the norm for Tyson. He was powerful, strong and unmerciful. You see Tyson was a lot like Goliath. Not quite as tall, but still pretty powerful.
For forty days, every morning and evening, Goliath would come out and defy the army of God. Finally a young man came forth to the challenge. His name was David. He was already at this time anointed by God. You read in 1 Samuel 16:13, "So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him (David) in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power. David knew that the Lord was with him. We now come to our text.
It must have been quite a shock for Goliath. Here comes David, a teenage boy, staff in one hand, five stones in his pouch, and sling. Goliath starts to approach David, with all his armour and shield bearer in front of him. When he finally gets a better look at David, he is not impressed. Look at the last words of verse 42. "It says that Goliath "despised him.'
Why did Goliath despise David? Goliath was insulted that the Israelites would send a boy to fight a man's battle. Verses 43-44 give you a picture of the attitude that Goliath had. Here we see cursing, boasting, and conceit.
Put yourself in Goliath's spot for a second. You are bigger, stronger, and the most powerful person in your entire nation, if not the entire world. You are undefeated, you don't know what it is to lose. And now for the last forty days, twice a day, you have been calling out a challenge to have someone fight you. And finally someone comes forward. A boy that comes just past your naval has challenged you. You think to yourself "I have fought to stay awake harder than I will have to fight this boy. What is going on here, Do they think that I am going to have pity on a him just because he is a boy? Wait until they see what I will do to him for insulting me!!!"
Do you get the picture? He is not impressed.
Then you have David. He has a speech of his own to give to Goliath.
You see, David did not need vain weapons. He had a supernatural weapon.
When Holyfield stepped into that ring against Mike Tyson, no one believed that he would win. Most people thought that the fight would be over almost as fast as it started. But as the rounds kept passing, people began to wonder what was happening. And when the tenth round was over, Tyson(the hands on favourite) was in grave trouble. When the eleventh round got under way, it was over for Tyson. A technical knock out was given in the middle of the eleventh round. The champion had been defeated.
When the announcer went to interview Holyfield, here were the responses that were given.
Question: No one believed that you would go this far, let alone win the fight, where did your strength come from?
Holyfield: When the Spirit of the Lord tells you to do something, you have to do it. There was never any doubt that I would be victorious. My God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is where I get my strength, because He and He alone is Victorious.
Now after that response, the announcer tried his best to deflect the comments made by Holyfield by asking another question, this time he specifically asked that religion be put aside and to just answer the question. To that Holyfield answered every question in ways that were truly lead by the Lord. Then the interview was stopped.
I'm almost certain that no one here saw the apologetic that Holyfield gave after the fight unless you were watching the Pay-per view station. I know that I watched several sports reports over the next following days, and not one station aired his comments on Jesus being Lord.
David had God on his side. He was anointed by the Spirit of the Lord. He walked in obedience to God. And he feared nothing but the Lord.
Imagine for a moment that you are a Philistine, watching the next events transpire. You see a young boy walking toward your champion. "Is that kid crazy?" you wonder a loud, and your fellow soldiers chuckle at the comment.
Then you hear Goliath, cursing at the top of his lungs on what he is about to do to that young boy. You cringe at the thought of seeing a defenceless boy being slaughtered at the hands of a trained soldier. But, there is something strange about this boy, he doesn't even flinch at what is being said to him. You wonder if the boy is deaf, or just plain insane. Then there is silence. The boy is beginning to speak. You hear what he is saying, but you can scarcely believe your ears. You ask your company commander if he said what you thought he said. Your commander verifies that you heard him correctly. Just about this time you see that Goliath has heard about all that he wants to hear and starts advancing toward the battle line. And to your surprise you see that this boy, with no armour is running toward the battle line also.
What is that kid doing? It looks as if he is reaching into his pocket. What does he have? Is it a dagger? Even if it is, it won't have any effect on Goliath.
He's twirling something, it looks like a sling, but it's hard to tell. Maybe he's twirling his hand in an insane dash to humour Goliath.
Smack! What was that? Hey wait a minute, Goliath seems to have stopped. He must be feeling mercy on the boy. That is very considerate of him.
Why is he falling over? The boy is running toward him. The boy is beside him. "Get up! Get up!" you shout, but it falls on deaf ears. You now realize that something is wrong. Something is dreadfully wrong. The boy has Goliath's sword. What is he doing? He can't be doing this. It just doesn't make sense. How can Goliath lose. He's never lost.
You then see the sword fall. Very clearly you realize that the battle is over as Goliath's head roll's from his body. Intense fear grips you. Never before have you felt like this. You have just witnessed a boy killing your champion, a giant, with no armour or military weapons. This boy has something that your army lacks - At this moment you realize that the one true God is on the side of Israel.
You turn, only to see your fellow soldiers fleeing. A cry rings out from behind you, the Israelites are coming, coming quickly. Their swords are drawn and their eyes are bearing down on you. Your time is over.
I bet that all of you have faced one sort of giant or another in your life. I know that I have faced many. And I also know that I have tried to defeat these giants on my own strength on many occasions. Every time I've tried it my way, I been defeated. Yet when I follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and obey His voice, I've never lost.
What sort of giant are you facing today? Are the odds stacked against you? Do you feel that you are in terrible trouble and are in need of help.
Remember these three simple points. Keep faithful to the Lord, The Spirit of the Lord will give you all the power that you need, and always remember that the Lord will always be there when you need Him.
You are the Lord's. He is our God. Ask and you will receive.

Coping when problems just won't go away.

"My grace is sufficient for you" Words that the Lord spoke to the Apostle Paul. Paul had what he described as a thorn in his flesh. He asked, no he begged, the Lord 3 times to remove it. And here is Paul, the same man who when his shadow fell on a person they were healed, is begging the Lord to remove this "thorn in his side." And the Lord basically said "No", My grace is sufficient for you." So what was Paul's option? He had to cope with it.

Have you ever had a nagging problem, a problem that makes you very uncomfortable. You have prayed, and prayed and prayed for the Lord to take it away - You call on the name of Jesus, you get anointed with oil, you fast, you pray some more, you rebuke the devil, you cry out to the Lord...and nothing happens. Maybe, just maybe, the Lord is trying to say..."My grace is sufficient for you." I can hear people right now saying ..."Tim, that's not what I want to hear ! That's not the way it's suppose to be!"  I'm not saying that this is your reality, I'm just saying that maybe it's a possibility.

One thing that I have noticed in my 4 decades of life is that most people don't like discomfort. I know that I don't. It's hard, it's a struggle, it can be tiring, it can be frustrating, it can be agonizing....but it's rewarding. It's knowing that I ultimately am not in control. It's knowing that the Lord is helping me cope. The trick of dealing with the discomfort is knowing that the Lord is with you during this time. The prophet Nahum said - "The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him."

So the question is, what am I going to do? Am I going to complain, get bitter, get mad, or allow myself to wallow in self pity? Or am I going to rely on God's grace, God's comfort, God's wisdom? He did say - "Paul, my grace is sufficient for you. My power is strongest when you are weak."
I choose to rely on God's grace.
 Have a good day friends.

Don't worry about tomorrow...tomorrow will bring its own worries !

How's your day been? Mine has been ok. My youngest son and oldest daughter are on antibiotics to fight infections that they both have. But they are doing fine. I just keep looking up. This song keeps coming to my mind. Some of you may know it, others may not ever have heard of it before. Either way, the lyrics are ageless. I know that some songs aren't played anymore because they are old fashioned...but I'm not going to debate musical style. That is not what tonight's blog is about...it's about truth. So here is the song...

I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMORROW

By Ira F. Stanphill
I don’t know about tomorrow, I just live from day to day; I don’t borrow from its sunshine, For its skies may turn to gray. I don’t worry over the future, Fore I know what Jesus said; And today I’ll walk beside Him, For He knows what is a head.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

Every step is getting brighter As the golden stairs I climb;
Every burden’s getting lighter, Every cloud is silver lined.
There the sun is always shining, There no tear will dim the eye,
At the ending of the rainbow. Where the mountains touch the sky.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

I don’t know about tomorrow, It may bring me poverty;
But the one who feeds the sparrow Is the one who stands by me.
And the path that is my portion May be through the flame or flood;
But His presence goes before me And I’m covered with His blood.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know who holds my hand.

I really think that the author really knew his Bible. The scripture that keeps coming to me is from Matthew 6 - when Jesus was teaching....I have put a few versus below.

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life— whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:25-34

Words to live by. Have a great evening!

Don't despise your small beginnings !

The first month of 2011 is almost over How has it been for you? Some of us have gone through extreme trials, others have gone through extreme joy...2011 is just beginning :) Can I give you a little encouragement tonight? In my reading, I came upon the biography of a fairly famous man....Here is his story.
1816 - His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
1818 - His mother died.
1831 - Failed in business.
1832 - Ran for state legislature - lost.
1832 - Also lost his job - wanted to go to law school but couldn't get in.
1833 - Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
1834 - Ran for state legislature again - won.
1835 - Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
1836 - Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
1838 - Sought to become speaker of the state legislature - defeated.
1840 - Sought to become elector - defeated.
1843 - Ran for Congress - lost.
1846 - Ran for Congress again - this time he won - went to Washington and did a good job.
1848 - Ran for re-election to Congress - lost.
1849 - Sought the job of land officer in his home state - rejected.
1854 - Ran for Senate of the United States - lost.
1856 - Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party's national convention – to get less than 100 votes.
1858 - Ran for U.S. Senate again - again he lost.
1860 - Elected president of the United States.

Did you guess who this was....Abraham Lincoln. Here is somebody who didn't know the meaning of quit. He was born into poverty, and faced defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown. He could have quit many times - but he didn't and because he didn't quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of the United States of America..

Now let me ask you...what are you facing today? Are the odds against you? Do you feel like dropping out of the race? Don't. Hang in there. Push through it. Lift your head high, put your shoulders back and hang on. Do not despise the days of small beginnings! Keep focused on where your help truly comes from – The Lord !
Have a great evening friends !

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin – Zechariah 4:10a

My last 15 years...in 6 paragraphs :)

It's a new season !

It's funny, I keep thinking back to a conversation that I had with a pastoral friend of mine – he asked me, “Tim, how do you feel about administration?” I know that I am gifted in that area. I sort of enjoy doing it now. As I reflect back - every work position in my adult career has had a lot of administration qualities. And even if it didn't start that way, eventually it changed into an administration role. I can organize, analyze, and dissect a situation. Then put results on paper.
For years as a pastor I would read, pray, write – whether it was a Bible study, sermon, a youth event, minutes of a meeting or writing a newspaper article – I used many administration skills.
When I worked for a Fortune 500 company (which will remain nameless) I remember a lot of people asking me “what do you do?” I often found that hard to answer. A couple of my colleges from the Canadian Headquarters would call me “the guy”. If they need something done – call Tim. Often I wouldn't do it myself, but I would know who to ask and how to ask in order to get the task accomplished. So what did I do...I wrote SSOP's, HACCP procedures, SAP procedures, Chemical training procedures, SPC procedures, Visitor presentations, All employee meeting presentations, employee letters, KPI reports to World headquarters, Year end reports to the Board of Directors at WHQ, Daily multimedia updates on the internal information system....I was sort of a ghost writer....I would write the procedure or presentation then the manager would put his/her name to it and either present it or keep it for documentation. It didn't really bother me too much – because I knew that when a meeting, or presentation went well and my supervisor got the recognition from the VP's or Directors (even though I didn't get the credit) in a round about way was a reflection on my work.
And now I am branching out into more administrative activities. For the last couple of weeks I've been developing a Health & Safety Manual for a business. You know – about 30 policies and procedures – Workplace Harassment policies, Violence policies, Blood born pathogens, Lock out, Confined space, WHMIS, PPE, Emergency evacuations, etc, etc, etc, and don't forget all the documentation that has to go with these procedures...training records, inspection records, medical records, Hazard analysis, visitor rules, etc, etc, etc...I'm up to about 300 pages so far and should be complete in the next week or so. Don't get me wrong, I rather enjoy doing this. I have pretty much all of this mapped out in my head, then I put it down on paper...or computer file, then paper.
What's next though...I always look forward, but often don't see really far down the road. I've tried that. Making long term goals...It's never worked for me. I think I know what I am to do, then the rug gets pulled out from under me. But I get back up. I've just got to keep getting back up.
Everyday I continue to feel God's calling on my life and my family. I tried for a long time to ignore it, but I can't. It's a burning ember that fails to go out. Recently I interviewed for a pastoral position, interview went well - but another person was chosen. That's ok, God has a place for us...We just have to find where :) Maybe I am too stubborn? Maybe I think about the situation too much? Maybe I just don't have enough patience? (I know that my wife will say....yes, yes, yes) But I digress... I keep saying this simple prayer... “Lord, where do you want me and my family? Make it known, and we'll go.” I guess everything is in His timing...and I just need to wait. Two scriptures that have kept me going are Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” And Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”  I realize that it's a daily faith walk for me, and it looks like it's going to keep on being one :)

Knowing God's voice

I was thinking today - what a life it would be to know, every time, without a doubt, when God was speaking to me. Why is that important ? - here is what I think...
The people that heard Your voice walked with You in the garden
The people that heard Your voice journeyed by faith
The people that heard Your voice woke early in the morning to Your prompting
The people that heard Your voice served You even with a thorn in their flesh
The people that heard Your voice rejoiced in time of sadness
The people that heard Your voice saw demons flee
The people that heard Your voice had barren wombs open
The people that heard Your voice saw chariots being driven by angels
The people that heard Your voice walked through a fiery furnace
The people that heard Your voice slept peacefully in the lions den
The people that heard Your voice saw water turned to wine
The people that heard Your voice picked up the things that carried them in
The people that heard Your voice arose from the dead
The people that heard Your voice had blind eyes healed
The people that heard Your voice saw stormy seas calmed
The people that heard Your voice saw Peter walk on the water
The people that heard Your voice were told the Comforter was to come !

Holy Spirit, thank you for being the Comforter and let me harken your voice clearer each and every day :)

The Dream of Free Education - for everyone

One of the many Universities in Ontario

Well, I'm sitting at home, sun shining outside (it was -27 C this morning) and I'm a little under the weather. The one thing that I don't like about feeling this way is that my mind wanders....Have you ever wondered "What if...?" I started to think about schooling, learning, and education. I don't have the answers on how to provide education for everyone - even better though would be able to provide education for everyone for free. A futile goal, to say the least...but at least I can dream...

Where would we be if education was free?
Knowledge being shared instead a costly commodity.
Minds being stimulated in ways never known.
Wisdom being shared and seeds being sown.
Who was the first person that thought - "I can charge a price,
For expressing to others what I've learned in life."
It just seems so wasteful to me,
To charge an elect few instead of enriching many.
Imagine the advances when people could study
What they really love and aren't charged money.
The youth on the street, the person in the field
Cancer being conquered, the sick being healed.
Each person has potential, though most don't reach it
While many want to learn, money is required to teach it.
How can this change, I really don't know
But I still ask the question and wonder it so.
